Union Pacific -- a railroad important to U.S. History Preview Go
Union Pacific -- the railroad established by Congress and Abraham Lincoln to span the continent - has had some very tough growing pains recently. But it is surviving and many believe it to be the most important American railroad. A 1996 merger with Southern Pacific to form the nation's largest railroad caused what regulators call an unprecedented breakdown in rail traffic through the heart of America that has lasted more than 10 months.
The Central New England Railway Bus Tour 2010 Preview Go
The Central New England Railway (CNE) came from northern Connecticut and west across the Hudson River in New York to Maybrook. It crossed the great bridge at Poughkeepsie. It later became part of the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad. In the past few years our tours have covered almost all of the old CNE except for the Springfield branch. For 2010 we plan to go back to the east end and start over. The tentative plan is to tour the area between Hartford and Collinsville and include most of the Springfield branch.

Off the Beaten Path - Explore and learn in the outdoors Preview Go
Outdoor, travel and history site by two retired Boomers. It combines geocaching, letterboxing, munzees, orienteering and related activities with history, travelogues, tips and commentary. Our quests include historical sites, forts, battlefields, ghost towns, parks, urban exploration and back country wilderness. We seek out little known places to explore, photograph and write about. The more challenging or remote they are, the better we like it. We hope to promote lifelong learning and curiosity about our world, especially in young people. If you are looking for ideas to teach and motivate kids, get them active outside and have some fun together, this site offers a lot. There's no armchair traveling. We've been to every place on these pages. The content is ours. Most of it is Off the Beaten Path.

Based upon the data and the various population studies that are now available, it appears that an extraordinary disintegration of the American Jewish community is in process. There was a time when every Jew could take it for granted that he or she would have Jewish grandchildren with whom to share Seders, Sabbath and other Jewish moments. That is no longer demographically possible.
